Local Plan to 2046

Local Plan to 2046

The recently issued draft local plan proposed an area known as the “North
Huntingdon Growth Cluster” which is an area that includes:

  1. Weybridge farm (between Brampton Hut and Alconbury where Brampton Cross is proposed).
  2. Hinchingbrooke Logistics Park.
  3. Ermine Street (between Spittals and Great Stukeley where Bloor Homes are building 1,000 homes).
  4. Land north east of Ermine Street behind the business park where Nokia used to be with a further 648 homes.
  5. Expansion of Alconbury Weald with 6,500 homes and a 150ha enterprise zone.
  6. A proposed new development called Sapley Garden Village which might have 7,000 homes.
  7. RAF Wyton where 4,000 homes are proposed and 15ha proposed for commercial and industrial use.

The anticipated issue with the North Huntingdon growth cluster (see chapter 9) is that there will be a huge increase in traffic heading for the Spittals roundabout.

With the removal of the old A14 viaduct at the railway station instead of traffic using a major National Highways dual carriageway traffic uses a single carriageway route past the police headquarters and the bottom of Hinchingbrooke Park Road meaning the likelihood of traffic jams on this stretch is significantly increased.

The local plan also includes

  1. The new hospital development which includes step down accommodation to be provided by any interested company (page 258).

  2. Proposed car parking for the country park off Huntingdon Road (page 292).

How this fits with the Active Travel Plan proposed in 2025 (and now delayed to 2026) to reduce the width of Huntingdon Road is as yet unclear.
