With a single access road through Hinchingbrooke Park Road, travel in and out of the estate for motor vehicles is a prevalent issue, with significant delays being symptomatic of any kind of congestion or incident on the surrounding road network.

November 2025 changes
Following changes made in December 2025, it is believed the traffic lights we all pass to leave the estate are taking into account traffic further up Hinchingbrooke Park Road (HPR) more than before so slightly shorter queues on HPR are hoped for.
In November 2025 changes were made to the traffic lights at the junction of HPR & Views Common Road (VCR). The lane to be used for going straight ahead towards Brampton Road was changed from the left lane to the right one. These changes are expected to be permanent.
ongoing Situation
However, improvements at the traffic lights can only do so much. The junction is at capacity at peak times and the new developments proposed will only add to the congestion already experienced by residents.
The regular traffic delays of over an hour for those living at the back of the HBK estate and 30 minutes for those living on Snowdonia Way and Dartmoor Drive are widely known, but still there is no declared intention as of yet from Huntingdon District Council (HDC) or Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) to build a second access road off the estate. The much longer delays that happen when the A14 is closed are still not enough for a second access road to be built.
Most people on the estate will have seen blue light ambulances delayed on HPR, needing to push through traffic to respond to emergencies, yet still little happens. The traffic problems have got worse as various developments have taken place on the estate. This includes the building of Cromwell school, more houses on the back of the estate and the houses built on the former forensic laboratory site. Since VCR opened, we have seen lorries stuck at the roundabout at the top of HPR and there is damage to the infrastructure such as at the traffic lights. Now we have HGVs and LGVs using VCR and HPR on a daily basis.

With the removal of the old A14 viaduct at the railway station, instead of traffic using major National Highways dual carriageway, traffic uses a single carriageway route along VCR past the police headquarters and the bottom of HPR. This means the likelihood of traffic jams on HPR is significantly increased.
We have a single access road, Hinchingbrooke Park Road, having to cope with all the developments that have led to an estate consisting of:
- 2,000 residents living in over 800 properties
- 2,000 hospital staff and 1,300 car park spaces
- 2,100 pupils at HBK School with 300 staff
- 200 pupils at Cromwell Academy school and over 30 staff
- 900 staff at the Cambridgeshire police HQ
- 100 Staff at the Fire HQ
- HBK Country Park – especially when large events are held
CCC’s formal policy since 2023 has been two access points on any development over 200 dwellings, although they say it has been their general policy for over 10 years.
Clearly it hasn’t been followed for Hinchingbrooke.
